The Heavy Guilt have delivered one of the most solid albums I have heard this year.

Imagine the classic essence of Led Zeppelin thrown into a cauldron with the poetic psychedelia of The Doors, the grittiness of The Velvet Underground, and the more modern nuances of The Black Keys for an intriguing stew of funky rock n’ roll.

Their self-titled third album is the natural progression of 6 seasoned musicians coming together to build upon the travels and experiences that hold their creative energies together.

The Heavy Guilt is as much Americana as it is avant-garde garage, as much folk blues as it is psychedelic indie stomp.

The Heavy Guilt came together 3 years ago. Two of the members were previously part of the popular band K23 Orchestra. When that group fizzled, Alfred Howard and Josh Rice began looking for a vocalist. Eventually they found Erik Canzona.

The search continued for a couple of seasoned vets who could learn music quickly and knock out songs in one take… Enter Sean Martin and Jason Littlefield, two of San Diego’s finest jazz musicians. The only thing missing was a drummer but after much deliberation they found Jenny Merullo.

The Heavy Guilt was now complete.

And it is beautiful.
