Minor Prophets Give It All On “Right Of Entry”

We’ve been getting to know Bobby G and Lady K of Minor Prophets. The faith based pop / soul band from FLA recently released “Right of Entry” – a slam-bang-wham-bam-and-thank-you-mom slap in the face debut that throw stereotypical ideas of Christian music on the street and some tight popping funky-grind-booty-shakin tracks on the wax.

I’ve listened to this record over and again for a few weeks and I like it more every time it spins. At first I was pissed (yeah straight up) about the autotune, but then I told myself, “it’s pop, get over it.” So I did… there’s a lot of great production here that let me do that with ease, and the other vocal treatments are just great! So there, one complaint, and it’s off my chest.

In the five songs on the EP ( a format that is becoming ever more popular, and even pushed by some in the industry as the “LP killer”) tackle subjects like pre-marital-sex, drugs, and the wacked out party life like the Packers throwing off the Titans offensive line in one deft move. (sorry, TN, I like the Packers). Witty, and interesting, the lyrics which promote abstinence and clean living aren’t droll and they always have a neat twist to the punch line, the hooks stick in your head and you find yourself humming them later in the day. I think that is the goal of good song-writing, don’t you?

“Who knew we could be so Schizophrenic” says the emerging South Florida girl/guy duo Minor Prophets when asked about their sound. Lady K and BobbyG aka Kareema Estrada (British Virgin Islander) and Robert Gibson (Bahamian) met during college in Ft Lauderdale after a group of friends stumbled upon their mutual love for music. Bobby G says, ”Lady K is a wordsmith and usually is better with creative word play and makes my ideas “slick”. Me on the other had with the little piano background I have, is stronger in the area of melody arranging, harmonies etc.

Bobby G has a style that reminds me of DJ Jazzy Jeff one minute but then brings in an island flavor the next. If self-proclaimed royalty Queen Latifa could rap, Lady K must be Her Royal Empress – The Lady K. Both of the rhyme-spitting have great soulful singing voices, too!

Groovin and bouncing over flash beats with all the cool tricks in the production, they’ve teamed up to make a record that must be a heck of a show when they play out. Lady K told us that when it is time to gig, they play pretty much everywhere and I got the feeling that after a set of hard knockin’ hip hop, or sexy pop, jaws drop as they take in the musical spectacle that is Minor Prophets.

Read our interview with minor prophets, to learn more about the band.

Now there are some who turn their ears off as soon as they read, words like “positive message,” “spiritual,” or “Christian,” but hey, if that’s you, give this one a chance. I’ll bet you walk away like me, thinking something like, “hmmm, I wonder what things would be like if young people listened to more music like this!”

Check out this cool remake of a Supremes classic!
