Promo Skratch EP by ThatKidNamedCeeLet’s break the ice. Let us know who you are, where you are from, and when did you fall in love with Skratching?

I’m Thatkidnamedcee from Houston, Texas. I started skratching in 1983 & haven’t looked back since!

Who or what are your influences? When did you first hear or see someone scratching?

I was influenced by Malcolm McLaren’s “Buffalo Gals”, Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit” & all the skratching by Mixmaster Ice on UTFO’s first album. The first person I ever saw skratch live was a DJ named “Al” in Denver, Colorado. I spent some time there in the mid 80’s.

Is there a Skratch / Turntablist scene in your area? Or are you a lone ranger in your geographic location?

I hear they are trying to build one. But I’m a Lone Ranger type. I like doing my own thing. I’m a very different type personality so I don’t fit in well with others/groups. Plus I feel I work better alone.

What’s one thing you can tell someone about Skratching that you wish you knew when you first started?

That it is an art that many do not understand. Therefore, do it because you love it. Don’t expect to “get big/rich” doing it. If it happens, cool. But don’t expect it.

What equipment do you use? Do you have a favorite piece of gear?

Vestax 06 & 05 pro with innofaders. Vestax PDX turntables. MPC & some computer programs for beats/recording.

What was the last song you listened to?

Soft Cell “Tainted Love” (dub version)

Do you have a favorite record you love to use for Skratching?

Either Superseal, the Scratch Science records, or Man O War by my man Leighton. VinylStyle is another fave.

What style(s) of music do you enjoy spinning?

I don’t DJ. Strictly skratch, make beats & skratch tracks.
