Interview with Plastic Friends – MusicTree Fest 2014 #MTF14

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman May 20, 2014 10:57 am

MusicTree Fest will be taking place in Manchester, Tennessee – June 6-7, 9-10. We will be publishing interviews with the performing bands as we close in on the 3rd year of this festival. View the full line-up.

Let’s start with the basics, who are you? Where are you from? What style of music do you create?

Plastic Friends (alternative pop/rock band from Bowling Green, Ky)
Will – Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar
Matt – Lead Guitar/Vocals
Phillip – Bass/Vocals
Nate – Drums

Was there an “ah-ha moment” in your life when you knew you would pursue music?

Will: I’ve always had music constantly running through my head; this made concentrating in school and paying attention in general somewhat difficult for me. When I started playing musical instruments I slowly realized that the music in my head started to become the music I was playing; they began to sync up to where I could put total concentration into playing music. Ever since I figured that out, music has been great therapy for me. Whenever I play music I can just escape to a place where nothing matters, no social pressures, no social stigmas for this or that; it’s very relaxing and exhilarating at the same time.

Phil: I grew up playing music in school, but a Foo Fighters concert my senior year changed everything. After seeing the joy they had on stage and imagining the adrenaline rush of having fans sing your music, I knew it was something I would love doing for the rest of my life.

Matt: Growing up with MTV still showing music videos I wanted to be one of the bands on there and in a Bevis and Butt-head episode.

Who (or what) motivates and inspires your writing and playing style(s)?

Will: I’m definitely influenced by grunge, pop and indie rock at the mainstream level. But what has influenced me the most in the past five years is the Bowling Green music scene. Being able to walk into a place like Tidballs and watch quality acts night after night really inspires the writing process.

Phil: The privilege of playing on stage motivates me. There are so many great acts out there it is impossible not to be influenced in some way. My love of music inspires my creativity.

Matt: My aspiration is to be like the greats, like the ones who influenced me.

What can we expect from your performance at MusicTree Fest 2014?

High-energy, poppy, three-minute rock songs. Our most important show is always the one we are about to play; we love to bring it every time!

If you could have lunch with one person, living or dead…
