Interview with Minor Prophets

by C Bret Campbell August 16, 2013 12:13 pm Tagged With: Christian, gospel

Right of Entry- Minor Prophets

Minor Prophets from FLA got in touch with us, recently, and sent over some really neat stuff! We felt like we should get to know them and help our readers to do the same.

Thank you again for this opportunity and remember the “Right of Entry” EP is free for download.

MTM To break the ice with our readers, as J says in his text interviews, let’s get started with a little bit about yourselves and what brought you together in Florida.
M Prophets We met at Art college in Fort Lauderdale.

MTM How long have you been making music as individuals? Is there any “real training?” I’ll hazard a guess that you got started in a church setting, am I too far off?
M Prophets Since 2007. Neither one of us has any formal music training we both took voice lessons here and there and yep, it started in the church.

MTM You are often classified as “urban gospel” which tends to lead one to think “Jesus Rap” but I hear a lot of musical styles and influences. What are some the things that you listened to as youngsters and how have they affected your style, today.
M Prophets We both grew up listening to a variety of music both secular and gospel, this allowed us to be more bold and relatable to people without faith.
We honor great music and take song writing/performance cues from great artists in both arenas.

MTM Your music espouses the virtue of clean living, encouraging abstinence from the sexual act until marriage and many other “traditional moral values.” I think that takes some really big brass in our culture. I’m really interested in the crowds you perform for, the venues available and that sort of thing. Do you have difficulty “competing” against the worldly music of the average weekend crowd?
M Prophets Absolutely, it is definitely interesting when you’re next after an act who just finished talking about partying and playing musical bed. What we strive to do however is to be “clever” in our lyrical approach and back it with music that is relevant. We want to be undeniable as great and creative artists and eventually people listen to the lyrics and “figure it out”. On the other hand because we are not traditional gospel, we tend to raise brows of some of the Christian crowd. We have done events at open mics, clubs, and community events and although we haven’t performed at a church event, we won’t shy away from that either.

MTM Curveball! Lady K, What is Bobby G’s favorite ice cream?
M Prophets I said Pralines and cream but later found out I was wrong and is actually Butter Pecan. Guess there is still some mystery to him.

MTM If you were going to buy him a car, what would he want, and what would you buy out of “spite” (lol)?
M Prophets He would want a Scion XB. Out of spite…a bus pass lol

MTM Does your typical audience “know what they are in for” or do they get a big surprise?

M Prophets I think they get a surprise. Most people expect to hear the lyrics to “Yes Jesus loves me”, but instead they get inspirational music they can rock out to. The name Minor Prophets probably adds to that surprise as well.

MTM Music like yours is bound to have a profound effect on certain people who are touched by it at the right time. How does it feel when one of them lets you know that words you sang changed his (or her) life?
M ProphetsIt definitely gives you a sense of accomplishment, like it’s all worth it.

MTM What are some of the obstacles of the spiritual music life?
M Prophets Finding the balance in lyrical delivery is a big one. Getting a message out there that can be digestible and relatable to everyone is an art, one we are still learning.

MTM Curveball! Bobby G, how many pairs of shoes does Lady K pack for a tour?
M Prophets Honestly Lady K is not a huge shoe person and definitely not a heels kinda girl so I’d say 2-3. One pair of heels to look cute as she walks in a venue but trust, those puppies are off at the end of night.

MTM Where would she want to go for a vacation, and where would you take her instead?
M Prophets Probably on a Mediterranean cruise either that or McDonalds drive through #DollarMenu

MTM Back to the serious stuff… In your journey have there been pleasant surprises specifically due to the “kind” of music you make?
M Prophets We found that people who expresses different faith or no faith whatsoever, have given our music good reviews and that has been very inspiring.

MTM How do you feel now that your record is out and the pressure is on to tour?
M Prophets The tour pressure isn’t as big as you’d think, however there is some pressure to release a hit single.

MTM What’s next for Minor Prophets?
M Prophets Hit single, record contract, European Tour.

MTM If there were one statement, idea or though that you really want to get across to your audience, what would it be?
M Prophets Preach the gospel always, use words when necessary.
