Interview with James Lee Baker

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 6, 2019 6:31 am Tagged With: Americana, Bluegrass, Folk, singer, songwriter, Texas, United States

James Lee Baker-Home Again

Singer/songwriter James Lee Baker delivers a powerfully emotive blend of sounds from the country/bluegrass/Americana realm of musical styles. His songs come packed with passion, plenty of pop appeal and an atmosphere that will have you longing for the simple life.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with James about his latest release, motivations, challenges and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I am originally from Amarillo, Texas. I mostly focus on blending story-telling into acoustic genres.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

I don’t exactly know. I suppose music is just a part of who I am and I feel the need to continuously create it. If I stop creating, I get restless so the creative process itself is important for me.

How is “Home Again” different than previous releases? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

This project was 2-3 years of writing in an attempt to put out a solid Americana LP. I wanted to explore this genre and see how it would fit with my writing style.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Oversaturation is a big problem for me. There’s so many great independent musicians who are not able to get the exposure they need to make a solid and lucrative career out of music. Technology has only hindered this further because everyone can be a musician quickly and push their content out, reducing the value of a song.

What was the last song you listened to?

Feel it All Around by Washed Out

Which do you prefer? CDs? Vinyl? MP3?

Depends on the environment. For intimate listening experiences with headphones, I prefer lossless audio into a digital-to-analog converter.

For single room intimate experiences, I prefer vinyl.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Spotify seems to be where its at for me, mostly due to integrations.

Apple is too proprietary and doesn’t work as well with smart home systems like Sonos and Google Home.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

Facebook or Instagram

Thanks for reading and supporting independent artists like myself!
