Dreaming In Brilliant Color With Crazy Mary

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman October 30, 2012 8:37 am Tagged With: Pop, Psychedelic, Rock

Dreaming In Brilliant Color by Crazy Mary

Crazy Mary is a psychedelic pop rock extravaganza that began in 1998 by Charles Kibel and Nick Raisz.

Today’s current line-up includes: Charles Kibel – Guitar; Em Z – Vocals; Walter Steding – Fiddle; Nick Raisz – Drums; Armand “The Wizard” Milletari – Bass; Parker Reilly – Keyboards.

Together they deliver an avant-garde psychedelic garage rock experience reminiscent of classics such as Jefferson Airplane, Velvet Underground, The Byrds, or Buffalo Springfield.

To their credit:

  • 7 studio albums (2 remix)
  • extensive college radio play
  • favorable reviews in publications such as the New Yorker, the Boston Globe, the Village Voice, and by NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams
  • they have played CBGB Festival 2012, CMJ Festival 2005, Midpoint Music Festival 2005, NEMO Festival 1999, Howl Festival 2004, Unicity Performing Arts Festival 2009

The band comes from a very interesting era of music in the NYC scene. Here is an excerpt from their bio:

Crazy Mary carries the flame for a time when downtown Manhattan was at its post-punk apex – gritty, smart, artful, edgy and sexy, before its soul was taken over by corporations. But true to the ideals of the era from which they emerged, the band remains fully engaged with the modern, eschewing sentimentality and nostalgia. Their new album, Dreaming In Brilliant Color (Humsting Records 2012), carries their music forward and keeps their mélange of psychedelia, tribal music and Velvet Underground inspired no wave very much alive and well.

Dreaming In Brilliant Color was produced by Kibel, keyboardist Parker Reilly and longtime engineer Michael Caiati. The album spawned from the purchase of a 1963 Gretch 6120 purchased by Kibel in early 2011. Inspired by the sweet tones, he cranked out 7 songs in less than 48 hours. All of them are featured on this album.
