Multi-instrumentalist Cadence Kid, aka Jason Turbin, makes a welcome return, just in time for Halloween, with the release of his latest single, aptly named The Darkness, out on October 28th 2016 via My Music Mind.

Jason has teamed up once again with his Grammy award winning brother, producer Cassidy Turbin (Beck, Bat for Lashes, Thurston Moore), with the track also featuring guest vocalist Amber Quintero (Stone Throw Records). The Darkness is a macabre, melodic synth-infused track, influenced by elements of classic hip hop with a twist of modern electro-pop thrown in for good measure; conjuring similarities to artists such as Metronomy and M83.

Cadence Kid is a whirlwind of musical talent with a keen ear for an undeniably catchy beat, as well as an ability to turn his hand to various genres and art forms within the industry. The Darkness further emphasises this fact, showcasing his burgeoning talents in the process, and will serve as a perfect end to 2016.

In this feature, we chat with Cadence Kid about the newest release, the digital era of music, influences and more.

Streams, Q&A and links to connect directly can be found below.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

I love all genres! I guess little bits of things find their way into the music and then I’ll consciously decide if that particular part fits or doesn’t.

How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public?

Since the beginning of this year as Cadence Kid.

Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?

I’m motivated to make music that I myself would enjoy listening to….It’s hard to do as I can be very critical of my own music but I try. My influences change from week to week. Right now I’m listening to John Williams. He’s such a genius!

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

I’m a big fan of Old school Hip Hop like KRS-One and A Tribe Called Quest so maybe just a little bit of those influences crept in but still being myself in the process…..I don’t think I’ll ever attempt to rap.

What was the last song you listened to?

When David Heard by Eric Whitacre. I’m a sucker for good choir music!!

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Vinyl is beautiful but sadly you can’t bring them with you easily so MP3s for the most part.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Streaming services have their pitfalls but this is just what’s happened to the music industry and we must adapt to it.

Bandcamp is great since it gives the artist a little more control these days.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?

I just put the music out and let the chips fall where they may. If the song is good and people like it and share it that’s all the gratification I need as an artist.

Do you gig, tour or perform? Do you ever live stream? Where can music lovers see you live?

Working on this for next year…..have to get a band together and take these songs on the road but that requires funding so I might need to sign with a label.

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?

Love is all you need:)
