Brian Hester – Traditional Folk Style All His Own

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman July 12, 2011 2:17 am Tagged With: Folk, Nashville, United States

New Folk From the Heart of Dixie

I met a young man a few weeks ago in Manchester, TN, named Brian Hester. He didn’t even mention being a musician ( the good ones are always humble about it). Another friend let me in on the secret. Well… I had to check out his tunes, you know how it is. All I can say is, “Wow, this fella is good!” We’ve been chatting through the net pretty much all day while I listen to his songs over and again and it has been a blast!

I asked him, “What got you started with music?” and got a neat answer.

A young man’s dream

When I was 13 my mom was watching a vhs of the making of one of Bruce Springsteen’s albumns and he was sittin’ on a stool playin’ acoustic guitar. I remember it like yesterday. I told my mom, “That’s what I want to do. I want a guitar,” and I got one for Christmas. Then I took lessons from Toshi Iseda a few years later and then branched into singing along with playing.

"When I'm not playing guitar, I'm playing guitar"

I began songwriting a few months ago. I always wanted to write but you cant control when a song comes, it comes when it comes. I have completed 2 years at Motlow and am going to MTSU  next semester. As of now I am leaning towards a music business major. In my free time I play guitar and when I’m not doing that I’m playin’ guitar!

I’ve been itching for a Martin Acoustic they are Soooo nice, especially for my style for music. I have a 54 Gibson jumbo j-45 but its in need of some work and it isn’t the sound I want. Don’t get me wrong, it’s amazing but not the sound I’m searching for…

All Heart

I counted no less than fifteen original tunes on this young man’s web-page. All of them written with a sincerity and maturity that would belie his age. Heart breaking, soulful, some comedy… very well rounded, with a voice similar to a young Tom Petty and a touch of Dylan, Brian knows Who he is, and has no problem conveying his heart. I think “Fade Away” and “The Worst” were my favorites, but, it is  a hard choice to make. I suggest you listen for yourself, you won’t regret it. Brian told me that he had been inspired by his grandfather (the only other musical member of his family). A good influence his Grandad was…

Brian has been playing at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. He’ll be at Tootsie’s on the 26th of July, and plans to Jam out his 21st birthday at Two Purple Pigs  in his hometown of Manchester. That’s a party I won’t miss! And I can’t wait to play a few numbers with him and our mutual friend Tyler Anderson.
