Amy Obenski and The Carbone Band

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman July 8, 2014 10:39 am Tagged With: Americana, California, Europe, France, Rock, United States

I recently received an e-mail about Amy Obenski and her recent collaboration with French group, The Carbone Band. The story and music are so intriguing, at the very least, I had to introduce you to them.

Below you can hear about the band from Ms. Obenski:

In 2012 Amy went to Europe for the first time with a mind open to surprises. This is where she met The Carbone Band from Nantes, France. In 2012 Amy went to Europe for the first time with a mind open to surprises. This is where she met The Carbone Band from Nantes, France. They immediately had two concerts. The music was a collision of Amy’s free “California girl” sound and the French’s deep passion and intensity. Their personalities and musicality immediately clicked.

Two days after her return to California, Amy decided she was going back to France. She planned a four-month tour across the United States, the U.K. and France, where she reunited with The Carbone Band. They played several concerts and the music started to grew and became intensely passionate, grounded rock that sways as if floating on the breeze.

In 2013, Amy returned again and spent three months with The Carbone Band. They recorded an album and participated in an artist in residence at La Maison des Arts. Her fifth album, Restless, will release in summer of 2014. Restless features the distinctive sound of The Carbone Band and also students and associates of La Maison des Arts. The Carbone Band is comprised of Philippe Crochet on guitar, Josselin Sebille on bass and Mourad Aït Abdelmalek on the drums.

With a stark and honest intensity, Amy Obenski’s rich, crystalline voice cuts through the noise of every day life.   She’s a California native.  Raised in San Diego and now based in San Francisco, the sound of the far west is unmistakably infused into her words and sound.  She’s toured the West Coast for ten years and even got her song “Carousel” into the Hollywood scene when it was placed on the TV Show, Grey’s Anatomy.

The album was released on July 1st so make sure to show your support.

Below is a recent performance video.
