NASHVILLE – Beginning and ending with productions featuring significant local connections, the nonprofit Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC)’s 2016-17 HCA/TriStar Health Broadway at TPAC season shines a spotlight on Music City’s vibrant and talented creative community and celebrates the region’s growing appreciation for the best of Broadway.
Announced today at an exclusive event for season ticket holders, sponsors, donors, group leaders, and devoted theatre lovers, the upcoming Broadway season launches with EVITA, produced in collaboration with TPAC by the Franklin-based professional theatre company Studio Tenn, and closes with the hysterical valentine to musical theatre, SOMETHING ROTTEN!, for which the music and lyrics were co-written by Nashville songwriter and musician Wayne Kirkpatrick.
The season includes the Nashville debuts of the 2014 Tony Award-winning Best Musical A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER, RENT – 20th Anniversary Tour, direct from London’s West End THE BODYGUARD, the new and critically-acclaimed production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, the 2015 Tony Award-winning Best Play THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, and the Tony®-winning and Grammy®-winning show BEAUTIFUL – THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL.
Special presentations include the return of RIVERDANCE – The 20th Anniversary World Tour. And, back by popular demand, THE BOOK OF MORMON, which played a sold-out and record-breaking one-week run in 2014, returns to Nashville.
“As a whole, our series honors a wide variety of traditions in American music and Broadway musicals. What I like best about next season is its diversity – the mix of great classics and the best of the cutting-edge productions in New York from the past few years,” said Kathleen O’Brien, TPAC president and chief executive officer. “We are exceedingly proud of the high entertainment and artistic value of every single show on the season. Each is exceptional entertainment. In some cases, our audiences will be transported to another place and time. In others, they’ll be swept away with joy and inspiration. In all cases, I am certain that our audiences will appreciate every minute of the magic, the music, and the power of the live performance.”
The unique collaboration to present Studio Tenn’s EVITA on TPAC’s annual Broadway season is a testament to Nashville’s capacity to make and appreciate great art. Much of the production design and construction will be done locally, and though further casting has yet to be done in both New York City and Nashville, TPAC is proud to announce EVITA will feature Broadway veteran Eden Espinosa (Wicked, Brooklyn the Musical, RENT) in the starring role.
“After 34 years of presenting Broadway, we are doing something we’ve never done before in presenting a collaboration with a local theatre company on our season. We have wanted to present Evita for some time, and when we found out Studio Tenn wanted to produce that show, the stars aligned for us to seize the opportunity,” O’Brien said. “This allows us to present a highly-anticipated title, build it using Nashville’s creative capability, cast it with Broadway stars, and provide audiences the chance to experience the incredible artistry, design, and craftsmanship behind its creation.”

A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER
(www.AGentlemansGuideBroadway.com) Getting away with murder can be so much fun . . . and there’s no better proof than the knock-‘em-dead hit show that’s earned unanimous raves and won the 2014 Tony Award® for Best Musical – A Gentleman’s Guide To Love & Murder! Coming direct from New York, where a most gentlemanly NPR critic said he’d “Never laughed so hard at a Broadway musical,” Gentleman’s Guide tells the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, a distant heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession by—you guessed it—eliminating the eight pesky relatives (all played by one fearless man) who stand in his way. All the while, Monty has to juggle his mistress (she’s after more than just love), his fiancée (she’s his cousin but who’s keeping track?), and the constant threat of landing behind bars! Of course, it will all be worth it if he can slay his way to his inheritance . . . and be done in time for tea.
