We started the Mid Tenn Listens podcast not long ago. Of course I wanted it available on iTunes.
I did my research, learned different methods, and decided I would just code an XML file by hand and submit it to the iTunes’ Podcast directory.
That worked for a while, but not only did it consume precious time, I started having issues with the feed updating on iTunes when new episodes published. I fixed it but then it broke again…so I found myself wasting even more time.
In an attempt to save you the frustration and time, I am going to tell you how I finally got everything on track (automagically).
Note: This applies to those using WordPress to power their websites.
Step One
Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income has THE best podcast tutorial on the web (from what I have found).
His tutorial was the ultimate “fix” to my problems and his steps are what I now follow to get Indie Music Mania from our blog to iTunes’ podcast directory.
So go check out Pat’s Step-by-Step Podcasting Tutorial.
Step Two
After creating your podcast and saving it as an MP3 file, you need to make sure all the ID3 tags and your logo are embedded in this file.
I use a program called MP3 Tag. You can also edit this information inside your iTunes library.
You also need space to host these files. Do NOT host them on the same server as your website.
We use Amazon S3 but I have heard others recommend against it.
Step Three
You want to use the Blubrry Powerpress plugin (for WordPress).
This plugin (after proper configuration) will create a feed for your podcast.
A link to this feed is what you will submit to iTunes.
After they approve your podcast, you will appear in their directory.
Any time you create a new podcast, simply publish it as a new blog post.
Include a link to the podcast MP3 file (a PowerPress Episode box will now appear on the Edit Post screen in WordPress), and your feed will automatically update each time a new episode is published.
You can also submit your podcast’s RSS feed URL to Stitcher Radio and Google Play in order to be listed on their services.
Simple, quick, easy. That’s how I like it.
I am sure you do, too.
