(looking for services?)

We are here to engage, support, promote, and empower independent musicians.

We live in a world where tech companies have entered the music business space in an attempt to build profitable, sustainable businesses. Any musician with common sense already knows the music industry is mostly smoke and  mirrors. At every turn someone or some entity is over hyping their abilities to get you heard by masses of people or get you in front of taste makers who might be able to change your life overnight.

I (joshua) released my first song online in 1999…before Google, before social media, before FB; you get the idea.

In 2002, when I mailed my first CD from my home in TN to a fan in Australia who had found me online, all my desires to find that “big record deal, etc” became null.

Thanks to my knowledge of the typical record contract, insights into the music industry, and everything else I had learned over the years; I knew being able to connect with fans directly and receive money from them…directly…changed the whole game.

When social media became “the new thing” and we were able to communicate with fans directly in real time; the game changed even more but it’s the wild west out here…and it’s a mess; especially for the average DIY, indie musician trying to take advantage of these technological advancements.

The purpose of our Indie Musicpreneurs Tribe is to connect and build a community of indie musicians in which we can openly discuss practical and realistic digital marketing strategies and the various tactics we use on services like Facebook Ads, Google Adwords, Email Marketing and more to connect with fans and build tribes around our music. We also recommend services, apps, books, firms, and other things that might be valuable to musicians, bands, and artists.

Since we launched in 2011, we have published thousands of articles featuring independent music from across the planet. We feel blessed and very grateful to have built a {very} large and growing catalog of indie music shared with us by fans, bands, artists, songwriters, labels and PR firms.

1) We are on a mission to connect great music with You…the fans, listeners, and enthusiasts of independent music.

2) We are on a mission to empower creative talents to be responsible Musicpreneurs / Artistpreneurs in a digital, entrepreneurial, self-starting, DIY environment.

At the very core we are Joshua Smotherman and C Bret Campbell. The original idea for this platform was the brainchild of Joshua Grosch who has a tendency to lay low and work behind the scenes.

At any time, feel free to contact us with questions, comments, or to simply chat. You can e-mail us using the contact form below.

Most importantly, without You – the fan, the enthusiast, the musician, the artist, the band, the venue, the promoter, the PR rep, the indie label – we would not exist.

We publish:

We also promote events and festivals.

We are also independent musicians who share in the same struggles as you. This site is a place where we can share our experiences, provide insight, and bring clarity to the abyss known as the Internet.

What we do

First, a few things we have accomplished:

We love music. We love helping people. This platform is how we accomplish both.

To summarize:

  • We feature, review and interview indie musicians as well as venues, studios, and other entities involved in music.
  • We cover (and sometimes organize) events. We also publish the Mid Tenn Listens podcast.
  • We coach and consult with and share information that helps bands build, control and maintain their online presence with the goal of empowering them to have more control over their career.
  • We help bands and artists make sense of social media as well as the dos and don’ts.
  • We help bands understand online marketing – the tools, strategies, resources, and various ways the web can be used to promote music and build a community.
  • We know about SEO so we share info related to search engine optimization.
  • We use WordPress to power our websites so we share information related to WP powered websites.
  • We provide website building and management services to artists, bands, indie labels, and small businesses.
  • We are able to provide songwriters, bands, and artists with digital distribution and publishing administration services.
